:00 and the nfl will announce today if san francisco is in the running to host a super bowl. >> reporter: we are not just talking about any super bowl. san francisco wants to host super bowl 50, a huge anniversary for the nfl that would include more than a week of events and celebrations. this is how this would work out. all the festivities would happen in san francisco. the actual game at the new 49ers stadium would be 40 miles down the road in santa clara. it's expected to open in 2014 and a stadium has to exist for two seasons to host the super bowl. san francisco is hoping to bid ant 2016 and 2017 games. the only super bowl in the bay area was in 1985 at stanford. the mayor submitted the application back in august and this is what's next. today nfl will announce which cities are in the running. if san francisco is one of them, it will host a plan on may 7th of next year. two weeks later the city will make a presentation to the 32 nfl owners. just to give you an idea, hosting a super bowl is expensive, about $25 million. san francisco wants to be part of the 50th and electricity reand say

in 10 innings. let the champaign go. most of the celebrations in san francisco were peaceful, some turned violent after the game ended. a number of fires were set in the streets of the mission district. kate is there now with the latest. >> she's checking the mess the fans left behind. there was debris in the street behind you earlier. >> reporter: it's still there right now. if you take a look, that charred remains of last night's celebration still here in the mission district. officers put down flairs so drivers can see where these pile of debris are. turned to mayhem here in the mission district. officers tried to disperse thousands of fans. fires to trash cans, couches and newspaper racks. officers told fans that were still here they were unlawfully assembling and needed to leave. you can see the violence from up above. chopper 5 got these shots of the mission district. some firefighters needed to be he is supreme courted to put out these flames. back out live here, we don't know when this debris will be moved out. we've seen the officers relight these flairs so people know the

'm michelle griego. time now 6:00. shots fired at an undercover police officer in san francisco's mission district. >> one suspect under arrest right now and another man is looking for two other suspects. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran has the latest. she joins us with the latest. >> reporter: actually i did mention it earlier. the mission district is where they are looking for the suspects. the good news is there are no injuries reported so far. you can take a look at the damage done to one officer's car. san francisco police say this all started at 1:0 this morning when an undercover officer was shot at multiple times from the moving car. the police department says there were three suspects inside. three suspects jumped out of the car. the officer caught up with one suspect and then pd at the time set up a perimeter to try and find the other two. as far as we know, those two suspects are still outstanding and they are currently looking for them at this point. the investigation is under way. we are hoping to get more information as the story develops later on this morning. live in the miss

i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 6:00. >>> some breaking news in san francisco. flames are shooting out of a popular restaurant in the city's west portal neighborhood and the muni tunnel is now being shut down. we have team coverage with elizabeth in traffic. >> in traffic. but first we are going right to cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran on the scene with the very latest. cate what can you tell us. >> reporter: i can tell you that the fire started in the squat and gobble popular restaurant here in san francisco. crews are busy battling flames. there's heavy smoke in the air. this restaurant is completely gutted. it is a complete loss for the building here. i can see already dozens of firefighters here on scene trying to tackle this fire. they have been at it for quite a while. crews say that they got the call right at around 4:00, 4:14 this morning and the fire quickly grew to three alarms. flames were shooting up as high as 10 to 20 feet. heavy smoke in the area and now they have set up a perimeter here along west portal. they have shut down as i was talking about

:04. hundreds gathered under the city hall rotunda in san francisco last night to remember ambassador chris stevens. ♪ [ music ] stevens was killed last month in an attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. among those at yesterday's memorial service were mayor ed lee and senator dianne feinstein. the libyan ambassador to the united states expressed his government's regret. >> we're very sorry. you send us one of your best diplomats but unfortunate will not be able to protect him. >> he said stevens was a good diplomat because he was interested in the lives of the libyan people. during the service has younger sister anne said his optimism inspired her to learn about the middle east. chris stevens of course a graduate of cal and grew up in piedmont and a good guy. i went to college with him. >> you were there at the service. >> i was there. i was really touched. his two sisters are doctors, his brother is a very good attorney. they both spoke. and a lot of laughter, george schultz former secretary of state, 92, got up there and just brought it all home. he was amazing. and the ambas

in san francisco. it started at the back of the building at the bay view hunters point building. a rear bedroom was damaged. everyone got out safely and they kept the flames from spreading to adjacent homes. it's been more than 24 hours since a pilot and his plan went missing after taking off from half-moon bay. the single engine plane left around 6 in the morning yesterday. the pilot heading down to tucson arizona but never made it. the plane is similar to this one here with a tail number n72ah. it is registered to man bay the name of of andrew haden out of florida. his wife reported him missing after the plane didn't make a fuel stop in apple valley. >>> four separate shootings in oakland in one afternoon and evening. six people are injured. the most serious incident happened just before 10 last night in east oakland. one victim has critical injuries. earlier two other people were shot in east oakland. in addition one person was wounded near lake merritt and they are all in stable condition. >>> a court appointed monitor has harsh words saying department leaders are backsliding on ref

and out for a fishing trip. motored out from the san francisco area. and around 10:30 when that wave hit. two were able to make it to shore. >> the problem was a delay in the search. happened at 10:00 but one of the subjects self rescued and able to crawl up to this farm house we're at and call 911. there was about an hour delay. >> the fishing boat drifted to shore but so far no clothing or tools or any other signs of the people who went over board. at this point, the search is on. it's been about 20 hours now those two have been lost at sea. and the coast guard will beef up their search efforts once the sun comes out. we did sea that aircraft getting ready to return to the scene to do more arial searchers. cbs 5. >> thanks. 84-year-old woman is under arrest. police say she was driving the car that hit a man crossing the street near the uc berkeley campus. a man in his 20s in critical condition. alcohol may have been a factor in that crash. >> the heat may have been a factor in the death of an elderly woman. >> cate is in concord where temperatures could hit triple digits today. >> repo

in most spots. already 65 degrees in san francisco. 64 san jose. 62 degrees in livermore and only going up from here. in fact, by the afternoon, it is going to be hot again in spots. inland usually in the 70s and 80s. today well above the average. probably some triple digits especially in the east bay valleys. 100 degrees in livermore. about 86 degrees in san francisco. and about 97 in santa rosa. enjoy it. we have some major changes coming our way. we'll talk more about that in a moment. first let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> we are going towards the bay bridge where if you want to beat the rush you can head out right about now because there's no metering lights and this is our pattern that we always see forming outer cash lanes starting to back up to the middle of the parking lot or beyond. this is a great reason to take fastrak. the middle lanes looking good heading into san francisco and we'll let you know as soon as they turn the metering lights on. in the meantime, very stop and go out of the altamont pass all the way towards the dublin interchange. pretty busy through liverm

a quick note. you think it's busy now? it's going to get really busy especially in san francisco this weekend. we have a number of things going on, fleet week, america's cup, street fairs, home games for giants, and the 49ers. so we'll be talking much more about this in the coming days. in the meantime, let's talk weather. traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. >> big changes between now and then and the weekend with all those events going on. the last couple of days have been spectacular. hot temperatures outside triple digits in the valleys, today we are starting to see some cooler weather. more of a sea breeze kicking in. mild to start out the day 50s and 60s now. by the afternoon, still staying hot in the valleys of. you will see mid-90s there but the triple digits are gone. a lot of 70s some 80s around the bay and out toward the coastline we may see a couple of patches of fog swinging in late in the day and, of course, that will help to cool down of the temperatures too. high pressure now beginning to weaken. that sea breeze going to start to kick in especially throu

series winners got a big welcome when they returned to their home ballpark in san francisco. giants flew home from detroit boarded a fleet of team buses for the trip to at&t park. and as you can see, a ton of people on hand. the manager singing the praises of his team. >> this was a special group. and, you know, we're not saying good-bye. we'll be here a couple of days, then it will be, see you later. and we'll see what happens. but i can't say i have had more fun than what i had this year. >> giants players took turns showing off the trophy to the crowd. there it is. next up tomorrow, that trophy on display -- romo i don't think is going to give it up, though -- because of the big parade at 11 a.m., starting at market street ending at the civic plaza. the podium where the giants will stand show off the trophy tomorrow afternoon. of course we'll have live special coverage of the parade of champions here on cbs 5 and on cbssf.com beginning at 11:00 tomorrow. they are letting us outside. >> they are. should be exciting. >>> a new effort is under way to limit the power of san francisco she

making their way through san francisco. also stretching in toward oakland and down the peninsula. to the north bay that's where the heaviest amounts of rainfall are so far. you see this line right here some heavy amounts of rain right along this line in through petaluma headed toward bolinas and novato in the next 30 minutes. things will be wet this morning and through the afternoon. it will taper off as showers but we should get an early pounding. elissa harrington is out in the middle of the rain. looks like just light showers but watch out, elissa, heavier rains coming your way. >> reporter: just what i wanted to hear. out here in corte madera, there's a lot of localized flooding a big puddle as drivers head on 101 north and we're also dealing with wind. check the flag across the street. it's wet, windy and cold, about 52 degrees where we are. now, the bay area is waking up to the first significant rain in the season. chp is asking for people to keep their speeds down. some flooding areas are larkspur, oakland, calistoga and antioch. there's actually been an accident in oakla
